Vulcano Tour in Sicily

Special tour for special persons

Blue tours are special tours designed by very expert people who are top level on the Tour topic.

Mount Etna is the most active and the tallest volcano in Europe and has been recognized a World Heritage Site on the basis of its intense and persistent volcanic activity, as well as for the fundamental role it plays within the Mediterranean bio-geographical region. An enormous black cone visible from a distance of 250 km, mount Etna dominates the entire province of Catania. The huge volcano was formed hundreds of thousands of years ago from the overlapping of four different volcanoes. Today its height stands at 3323 meters. About 500.000 years ago, there was a large gulf in the Ionian sea where the Etna is situated now. The result of this long and complicated evolution is the majestic volcano that we see today, which continues to grow, to evolve and to incessantly modify the landscape. Even today, the majestic Mongibello (usually called Etna), characterized by fluid volcanism and therefore relatively safe, frequently erupts from the summit mouths or lateral craters often putting houses, woods and cultivated fields at risk. Visiting Mount Etna, we can often see two different faces of nature side by side: the moon-like landscape of recent lava flows and in surrealistic contrast, the extended green areas where the vegetation, after several centuries of struggle, has re-conquered old lava fields. There are numerous ways to immerse yourself in the natural wonders that is Mount Etna. Our tour is a mix of unforgettable experiences, history, legends and wonder that will stay with you for life!

  • Day 4   Alcantara Gorges -  Grand adventure tour trekking and rafting*

(Difficulty level: Medium)

Breakfast in hotel.

Departure for our grand adventure tour, Alcantara Gorge ( approx. 9.00 a.m / 6.00 p.m. )

A volcano can create some pretty interesting terrain, and Sicily’s Mt. Etna is no exception. Some of the geographic impacts of Mt. Etna aren’t even visible above ground, as is the case with some of the Alcantara Gorges. Several thousand years ago, the Alcantara river's bed was blocked by a lava flow from Mount Etna. As the lava was cooled much more quickly by the water than it would have done otherwise, it crystalized in the form of columns. Over the next millennia, the river naturally eroded a channel through these columns, resulting in impressive gorges and ravines. It is calculated that the eruption from Mount Etna that formed this flow of lava took place around 2400 BC. During this excursion, you will see the amazing canyon created from ancient lava flows crossed in the center from the icy waters of the Alcantara River.  For those who seek adventure, a body rafting experience will be provided along the Alcantara river. Diving gear and all necessary equipment will be provided. Once you reach Gole dell'Alcantara, you will wear the complete equipment (diving gear, helmet and jacket) and you will start going down the river to the valley, following an expert guide. Along the way you will explore rock formations of volcanic origin. The itinerary is approximately 2.5 km long, including both traveling by water and on land. You may also swim into some stretches of the river or let the river gently guide you afloat.  At the end of the trip, a minibus will bring you back to the starting point.

Lunch in the botanical park’s restaurant.
Afternoon guided visit to the Alcantara geological and botanical park
Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight.

  • Day 5  Etna Emotion tour at 3000 mt*

( cable car  / special unimog vehicles  -  difficulty level: Easy/Medium)
Breakfast in hotel.

Departure to the highest viewpoint on Mount Etna ( approx. 8.30 a.m / 4.00 p.m. )
The excursions to the summit of our “gentle giant” are perhaps the most ambitious destinations for any Etna enthusiast. The beauty of this spectacular scenery created by the violent force of nature will make a lasting and powerful impression.
After a pleasant ride in our comfortable vehicles, passing through the small towns of Pedara and Nicolosi and the cold lava fields formed over the centuries, you will reach the “Rifugio Sapienza Etna”. Here the Etna Emotion 3000 m begins.

A cable car will take us to an altitude of 2500 meters.  From there, we will eventually reach an final altitude of 2900 meters on our special unimog vehicles. The area you will find yourself in is called “Torre del Filosofo” at the foot of the main crater. Stunning views over the Mediterranean surrender to you from this vantage point, weather permitting.
A guide will accompany you during an approx. 40 minutes tour, visiting the still hot smoking craters, created by the 2002-2003 eruptions. Back at Rifugio Sapienza, the tour ends  with a visit to a real lava cave, equipped with helmets and torches.

Lunch with a tasting of local products, immersed in the green woods of Mount Etna.

Return to the hotel.

  • Day 6 A taste of Etna Wines

 Breakfast in hotel.

10.00 a.m  Departure to visit one of the vineyards and the wineries in the ETNA DOC area.
Viticulture has very ancient roots here. Etna’s wine falls in three typologies (red, white, and white superiore). These were the first Sicilian table wines to obtain the recognition of its own Denomination of Origin. These incomparable wines are the fruit of a heroic viticulture of the par-excellence indigenous cultivars – Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, Carricante – which only here, in Etna’s territory, can express their best.  The viticulture practiced at these altitudes, in unique and unparalleled conditions, makes of Mount Etna the new frontier for Sicily’s oenological excellence in great part thanks to innovative winemakers, many of whom practice biodynamic winemaking.

Professional tasting and lunch during the tour.
Return to the hotel and free afternoon.

7.30 p.m  Departure for Linguaglossa, dinner at the Shalai Restaurant, one star Michelin restaurant on the slopes of Mount Etna.
Great credit to the kitchen run by the young chef Giovanni Santoro, specializing in finding original and authentic dishes unique to the Etna region and accompanied by a careful selection of wines from the volcano.
